Tulip Talk 1.0.1 feels like an app on your phone

By Tulip Talk Team ·

A tester told us the Android app "looks like a web page". They were right, and they could point at exactly why: a grey flash every time they tapped a button, a text-selection menu popping up when they held their finger on the bottom bar, the whole page rubber-banding when they scrolled past the end, and a white band above the header that did not match the app. Version 1.0.1 fixes each of those.

What changed on the phone

  • No grey flash on tap. Buttons and links no longer light up grey while your finger is on them. Keyboard users keep the focus ring; that is a different thing, and it stays.
  • No copy menu on the navigation. Holding your finger on the bottom bar, the header or a tab no longer selects it. Lesson text, chat messages and Dutch words are still selectable, on purpose: long-pressing a word to look it up or copy it is part of learning.
  • No bounce past the edge. The page stops where it ends instead of stretching. This is only in the app. In a browser the same gesture is pull-to-refresh, so the website keeps it.
  • The bar at the top matches the page. The strip behind the clock and battery icons, the strip behind the gesture bar and the launch screen now use the page's own background, in light and dark mode. Opening the app in dark mode no longer flashes white first.

Pages that fit the screen

Some of you saw a page that was cut off on the right: the header clipped, the bottom bar reading "day Learn…". We assumed a zoom problem. It was not. The page was laid out wider than the screen, and a phone app that cannot zoom out simply shows a slice of it. On a 393-pixel-wide phone with larger system text, the coach page measured 420 pixels wide. Three things caused it: a chat box that would not shrink, a "Start" button that would not share its row, and one link that refused to wrap. All three are fixed, and the app now checks itself for this in our tests at 320 and 393 pixels.

The AI coach tells you what it is doing

The first time you ask the on-device coach a question, it has to load a model, and on a phone that can take a while. The app used to show a bar that never moved, next to a link to the model file. Now the bar follows the real download and load, step by step, and if nothing has arrived for fifteen seconds it says so instead of pretending. The box only appears when a model is actually loading: not on the cloud tier, not when you come back to a page whose model is already loaded. Every label in the coach, including the badge that now says "Runs on this device" or "Runs in the cloud", is translated for Ukrainian and Arabic readers, where it was English before. The file details support staff need are still there, one tap away, under "Diagnostic details".

Smaller things

  • In the guided chat, only the conversation scrolls. The step you are on stays put.
  • When you speak, "Transcribing…" only appears once the speech model is actually ready, not while it is still downloading.
  • The focus ring, the outline that shows where your keyboard is, is darker so it passes the contrast check on a white page.
  • The placement test's level-up screen has a way out, and the exercise pages share the same "back" wording.

What has not changed yet

The colour of the status bar follows your phone's light or dark setting, not the theme you pick inside the app. If the two differ, you will see a light strip above a dark header, or the other way round. Making it follow the in-app theme is layout work we have not done yet. On Android 12 to 14 the bar colours also do not take the page colour at all. That is tracked, not fixed.

If you use Tulip Talk in a browser, you already have all of this. The Android build is going through Google Play.
